BOMBAY ISTYLE: Jazz and Glam in Bombay Velvet Niharika Khan

I recently watched Bombay Velvet, featuring Ranbir Kapoor as a mafia-wannabe and Anushka Sharma as a jazz singer, set in a fictionalised 60s' India where jazz music meets Prohibition, tommy guns and Bollywood jazz. Although there were scenes in the movie which weren't quite credible of Indian culture at this time, I loved this mish-mash of film-noir meets the ganster life and Roaring Twenties - basically a lot of themes I like!

Costumes designer by Niharika Khan took inspiration from the 40s, 50s and 60s for the outfits of this film, and it really shows - the pearls, feathers, elaborate headpieces and retro dresses are all beautifull made - such as the white pearl and feather dress below, whcih looks pretty fab.

The other outfit which was really striking is this emerald green maxi dress, which apparently weighed a staggering 35 kilos! Again, this is another outfit which reminds me of shimmering 60s dresses, jazz-lounge-singers-style, and Anushka pulls its off well.

Another outfit which struck my eye is this purple floral and ruffle dress, which has a lot of details and bolumous skirt - and completd by a matching floral head band.

The other extravagant piece which was made for this film is this one for Raveena Tandon in her cameo song as a sultry jazz singer. This is a very extravagant outfit, and one which must have taken the designer a while to create, as it's painstakingly made with peacock feathers and beading on a sumptious gown which really looks dramatic. Raveena really made this look her own, with her sultry poses and deep red lipstick!

I also really liked this black and white stripey dress worn by Anushka to the races in one scene, it's very 'Ascot' in its own way and very striking. There's also an echo of an Audrey Hepburn style to it, complete with the big sunglasses, which I quite liked!

There's also this outfit, a red and white floral dress which is a lot more girly and feels inspired from a later era - while I didn't love the dress, I liked the red floral hair piece!

I also noticed this beaded burgundy dress, which is not as extravagant as the feathered-and-pearls outfits from before but still works because it gives a very sultry style.

I also liked some of Rosie's more day-to-day outfits, which are a lot less glamorous but a little more sweeter, from the polka-dot flats and floral headband to the floral earrings, something I've seen from the 60s and looks very sweet on Anushka.

Another more casual piece was this outfit, I couldn't get a picture of the dress but it's a polka dot halter neck dress with a matching hairband, which Anushka finishes off with a classic beehive hairstyle and eyeliner flicks!

I thought this was a really adventurous take on the jazz-life and 60s India, with plenty of inspiration taken from different places. I also like the fact that the detail is so well done, with outfits not just limited to the women but tailored to the male characters, with double-breasted suits and broad lapels, as well as the costumes of those around them.

It's also really great to see a film which attempts to fuse Indian fashion with an older era, and for me a lot of it works because it's so well done - especially down to minor characters such as these two ladies below!

What did you think of the outfits in this film?

BOLLYWOOD ISHTYLE: Kangana's Green Maxi & Freida's Chic Sari

I know, I know, I've not been posting for a few days! I've been busy with a few things at home which has meant no browsing at eye-candy for a few days, but I'll be back with regular posts now that I have a few days of Christmas holidays!

In the meantime, how lovely are these - a beautiful green maxi dress complete with retro curls on actress Kangana Ranaut, and a funkily-draped a sari (not to mention that lovely work on the high collar of the blouse) on Freida Pinto (although I have to say I'm less keen on the lace number of the maxi dress on the right). Worn at a Winter Weekend gala thrown by A Small World foundation, the girls look glamorous and effortlessly chic, probably because they haven't overloaded the look with accessories.

Freido Pinto wears an Anamika Khanna sari, which is accessorised with a beautiful Pinky Saraf clutch which you can't see in the image below, but is in this picture and which I love (and want!). The lovely Kangana wears a green Gauri & Nainika gown complete with a cute pink Vince Camuto bag, although it's her hair (which seems 1920's inspired!) and lips which I really love.

KAPRAY SHAPRAY: Sonam's Vintage Look in Masaba

I thought this was sweet and simple, Sonam in the ever-popular Masaba, which is a striking black-and-white sari with some really pretty flower earrings, and of course, beautiful red lips!

Although admittedly, this sari appeals to me not only because of its retro look, but also because the sari print
is eerily similar to a kameez suit my mum made for myself and my sister in the 90s - although ours looked less stylish than this sari, we still like to think we pulled it off!

COLOUR COMBINATIONS LOVES: Navy, Ochre & Maroon

I've been looking through my wardrobe (both western clothes and Asian!) and have been looking for inspiration for colours, styles and pieces to put together in a different way. I'm in maxi-skirt-mode at the moment, and these are a few of the skirts I've been putting together to see what colours suit each other. I loved these dull colours, the maroon, mustardy-yellow and darker blue, which gives an almost retro look.

It gave me the idea that this could be translated into Asian dresses, like a maxi dress in rusty reds with mustard and navy piping or embroidery, or a navy skirt and jacket piece with maroon and mustard work - I'm sure it's been done already, but it's still worth looking at for your next outfit! (I'm already matching yellow, red and blue bangles to these colours already!)

What do you think of this colour combination?

Curly Fry's Shopping Therapy! My Summer Haul

I've been updating my wardrobe with summery items, seeing as the weather's getting warmer (yaayy summer!), so I thought I'd post about a few things I've bought lately, and what's out on the high street. I've been favouring more looser, flowy clothes and simple blocks of colour, which makes it easy to mix together and accessorise with my hijab.

So far, I've bought these skirts in light mint green, and a pinky-nude colour, which I'm happy with, particularly as I'm loving my nude and pinky-brown shades lately, and the mint green is something different for me (plus the cut of the green skirt is very flattering and feels great on!)

Skirts from River Island and New Look

I've also bought a few light, cotton summer dresses which I wear with my long cardigans, which are perfect for the summer. I loved this leafy-ish dress which is light and has fuller sleeves, so there's less layering, and the second dress (which I couldn't find an image of it on the site, so I took a picture of the pattern) which has a subtle, colourful print to it which looks pretty, and which I like because it'll be easy to pick the colours out.

 Dresses from H&M

I bought a few scarves too which I really liked, two of which were surprisingly from Dorothy Perkins, and I loved these because they're light, made of soft cotton, think and breathable. I don't tend to wear black and white very often, but these stood out to me because of the funky, almost retro prints which I think would jazz up an outfit.

Scarves from Dorothy Perkins

Lastly, an outfit is not perfect without shoes! To be honest, I haven't been going crazy over shoes this summer, particularly as I tend to stick to flats which are comfy and easy to walk in, which I do a lot of! I've also been looking for beach shoes too, which I want for when I go to the beach and to other sandy places,

Shoes from H&M and Office

I've been keeping an eye out for a few more summery must-haves, like loose dresses, cardigans and perhaps some sandals, but for now, I'm happy with these! Are there any summer items which you've had your eye on, and any you would recommend?

KAPRAY SHAPRAY: Manish Malhotra's Retro Designs at WIFW Fashion Show 2013

Thought these were quite funky, especially the use of the 'harlequin' print on popular designer Manish Malhotra's outfits, which added a very retro, almost bohemian splash of colour to some interestingly designed outfits. And although some of the designs are a little different, I do like them (I live the jacket the best!) and it's nice to see something different from Malhotra's signature look such as the big skirts with heavily-embellished borders.

What do you think of this collection?

HIGH STREET DESIGNS: London Skyline Kameez

I've seen a lot of printed, quirky kameezes in the high street as well as the catwalk, which I think is cute for more casual, less formal fashion. This 'skyline' style kameez of London caught my eye, which I quite liked because of how quirky it was - not sure how likely I would be to wear it, but I did think it was very different!

I also thought the vase printed kameez next to it was quite adventurous, again not something I may wear because the colours are slightly too bold for me, but I have seen a lot of similar designs on kurtas, which are quite in fashion in Pakistan at the moment (along with fitted churidars or leggings).

What do you think of these?

GLAMOROUS ACCESSORIES: Retro Robot Ring

Yaayyy, another new ring from le sister, which I ADORE because it's so cute and quirky. Now to find a way to wear it at work without people thinking I'm crazy :)

BOLLYWOOD ISHTYLE: Asha Parekh Retro Glamour

I do love the 60s and 70s retro styles and beautiful, iconic looks of the time - eyeliner flicks, pretty saris and beehive hairstyles. I think this is a great example of an iconic, timeless look, which would still look amazing in today's trends. I'm not a huge fan of orange clothes, but Bollywood actress Asha Parekh looks great in this peachy orange sari, down to the pretty, sparkly jewellery.

What do you think of this look, something you would like to replicate?

Bollywood Art Project in Mumbai

I thought these Bollywood murals in Mumbai by the Bollywood Art Project were an interesting version of street art, which has proved quite popular and is a great idea for representing iconic Bollywood culture. I've seen different examples of retro and classical films represented in art several times, and I think these large murals are certainly eye-catching pieces which look great, especially because of the famous scenes, actors and eras depicted.

There doesn't seem to be many that have been completed because it's still an ongoing work in progress, but I'll be looking out for more!

MAKE-UP REVIEW: Elegant Eye-Liner Flicks

I love my eyeliner. Out of everything I wear, my eyeliner is my staple, go-to, magic make-up product which has the ability to turn me from zombie-licious to, well, a girl. I love my flicks too, especially because I really find that it elongates the eye and really gives some shape to it which looks really elegant.

I'm always on the lookout for more ideas, and thought these would be amazing to try, especially as they all vary in terms of dramatic to subtle, and there's something to suit everyone! Also, it's a good way to practise, especially as I find some people are better at using either pencil or liquid liner than the other - and these are great for inspiration.

I think I'll try the fourth one down tomorrow (Retro style), although maybe without the falsies!

BOLLYWOOD ISHTYLE: Om Shanti Om's Retro Style

I know 'Om Shanti Om' has been analysed to death already since it was released a good few years ago, but just wanted to post a few quick pics about the retro style of the outfits in this fulm, and also a few of the traditional ones. This film is one in which Deepika Padukone really shines, and in my personal opinion, I don't think any of her other film has made her look as beautiful as she did in this one. What I loved about the fitted kameezes with small slits and the tight churidar trousers she wears is the bright simple colours which flatter her skin tone, coupled with the 70's style make up and hair which looks great (even with the little touches like the lace sleeves, faux pearls and beehive hair!)

Another outfit I wanted to look at is the pink outfit she wears, which is basically a long-sleeved choli with a lehnga skirt. I like this outfit as it's very feminine and elegant. I also wanted to point this outfit out as I have an outfit very similar to this (which will be posted in more detail later on!)

I also liked this layered, red-and-purple dress, which looks looks quite ball-gowny yet surprisingly pretty in its layers of colours.

The next, more traditional outfit is this gold and velvet black combination, which she modelled for the catwalk ramp shortly after the film's release. I think what I love most about this outfit is the fitted sleeves and hemlines of the dress.

Lastly, this green and black dress also deserves a mention, as I think green is one of those colours that can often go wrong, and in this case it looks lovely as a maxi dress with black work (apologies for the picture quality, it was really difficult trying to get hold of some!)

Some lovely outfits here, and justice done to the 70's style here I think!
